Character
Name: Phoenix Wright
Series: Ace Attorney
Timeline: post Dual Destinies (2017, age 34)
Canon Resource Links: here is good! i'm using the most generally agreed upon interpretation of the AA canon timeline for this app; you can find an explanation of that here.
Personality:
(for clarity's sake, i'll be referring to individual games with their initials; PW1 for the first main series game, PW2 for the second, AJ:AA for the fourth starring Apollo Justice, etc etc etc. here's a list of all the games! (scroll down to the "games" section :^) )
As the titular character of his series, Phoenix has endured many different character arcs and developments over the course of the series. However, despite the somewhat rocky character progression (compare PAW3 Phoenix, to AJ:AA Phoenix, to Dual Destinies Phoenix; it's a little jarring!), his base personality remains the same. Phoenix is a well intentioned defense attorney who will go above and beyond for the sake of his clients. While beginning the series as a very naiive and blundering lead, over the years Phoenix has gained the confidence and experience to earn the respect of the legal world, and after regaining his badge during the gap between AJ:AA and Dual Destinies, is currently enjoying a successful return to his career alongside his family and coworkers.
Phoenix is, and always will be to some extent, the most level headed and reasonable of all the characters. He's quick to shut down his assistants should they go on ridiculous tangents, and is quickly exasperated by their antics. During the seven year bridge between PW3 and AJ:AA, some of his serious nature gave way to a much more sardonic, morally neutral personality (although he has always shown signs of being rather snarky, although in previous games he only did this in his head), and after becoming an attorney again, this translates has him being noticeably more easy going and teasing towards the younger members of his law firm (Apollo describes him as cryptic on multiple occasions, and he often encourages his daughter Trucy with her shenanigans.
Both prior to his disbarment (PW1 - PW3) and following the return of his badge (DD), Phoenix in court is passionate, headstrong, and obstinate to a fault. He endures many abuse from the prosecutors simply to earn a chance to prove his clients innocent. Phoenix doesn't do this out of any pride to keep his record clean, though; he does this because Phoenix has and always will believe that his clients are truly innocent. His strong belief is the method by which he makes his famous court "turnabouts"; if his client is innocent, then someone else must be guilty, thus, there must be a way to find out. Phoenix gets very exuberant and excitable during trials, especially when he knows he's onto something or found a correct answer, which many other members of court find to be childish or foolish. Nowadays, after years of experience, Phoenix has lost much of his overeager, blundering court attitude, but he's still incredibly passionate through the confidence, and remains loyal and sure of his clients despite the troubles he's had to overcome in the past. After all, he still remembers the reason why he became an attorney; to help save his childhood best friend from becoming a demon prosecutor (a favor which is later returned in DD).
Outside of the courtroom, Phoenix is an incredibly loyal and trusting person. He is protective over his friends and family, overly rash in his efforts to protect them. He ran across a burning bridge (and promptly fell into a freezing river) to try and save Maya in PW3, and in DD, when his daughter was held hostage at the Space Center (along with others), he wastes no time rushing over to ensure that she is safe. Phoenix as a father is very nurturing and protective, although his goofier side comes out even more when he's around Trucy. His loyalty to his friends often puts Phoenix in sticky situations, often caused by his own rash decisions made on their account; friends and family members have been put in danger, held hostage, and trapped many times in relation to/during one of his cases.
Despite overcoming the struggles he experienced as a shamed attorney, some of the negative aspects of his seven year stint as a near destitute piano player remain with Phoenix today. He can come off as cold or cryptic when giving advice, and his sense of rigid moral compass still remains slightly wavered. He's certainly better than in AJ:AA, however; to compare, in AJ:AA, he had Trucy plant forged evidence with Apollo because he knew someone was guilty, despite forged evidence being what got him disbarred in the first place, and is something pre-disbarment Phoenix would never do. Compare this to Dual Destinies, where he is critical of Professor Means' method of teaching lawyer abilities, that "the end justifies the means", something AJ:AA Phoenix would have agreed with. This shows that Phoenix did seem to mostly overcome that dark time of his life, moving forward to attempt to change "the dark age of law", starting with his study into the return of the jury system.
Overall, Phoenix is a good natured attorney who functions as the level-headed glue that keeps his friends, family, and office together. He isn't so stern as to not have a soft, goofy side, and loves to tease and poke fun at his coworkers (to their chagrin). Devoted to his job and to his clients, Phoenix has developed from a greenhorn defense attorney and into a mentor and loving father.
With the mod's blessing, Phoenix will be coming into Route with vague memories of the time he was last played here by me (this was in 2011; here's a link to his old journal). He will recall his stay here upon arrival, but won't be able to recall specific details other than faces and general knowledge. It's been eight or so in game years for him since being here, after all.
I'll be handling the canon established in the Phoenix Wright vs. Professor Layton crossover game as being tentative canon; I myself am not done with the game, so at the moment, the most he'll know is that the experience Definitely Happened and will recall the faces of those he met there (but may get these confused with people he met in Route prior). I might canon update him to have more PW vs PL knowledge later on! (Unless the mods say otherwise, of course.)
Strengths/Weaknesses:
✔ Determination. Getting Phoenix to give up on something is like pulling teeth.
✔ Loyalty. There's isn't much he wouldn't do to protect and care for the people he loves.
✔ Quick-thinking. Being able to think of creative ways around a problem are part of what makes him so good at his job.
✔ Trust. He has to believe all his clients are innocent, often based simply on their word alone.
✔ Easy going. He's a very genial and comfortable guy to be around. People tend to flock around him due to simply being a good guy.
• Afraid of heights. Which goes to show how much it meant when he crossed that bridge to save Maya all those years ago.
• This man cannot be hurt, goddamn. Phoenix has endured so much physical trauma over the years, including but not limited to: being tazed, swallowing glass, being hit by a car, physically threatened by mobsters, etc etc ... hard heads seem to run in the Wright family.
• Deadpan. He can be a wee bit of a fun kill. He can sometimes take things a little too seriously, and needs someone to help him see the goofier side of things.
✘ Obstinate. Getting Phoenix to give up on something is like pulling teeth.
✘ Incredibly rash. Often runs into situations without thinking them through. Applies both in court and out of it.
✘ Sarcastic. To the point of being flat-out blunt and rude on occasion. This is mostly displayed through his in-game inner monologue, though.
✘ Quick to judge. Especially based on appearances.
✘ Almost too trustworthy. This has led to him being tricked by clients who actually ARE guilty.

[Would you look at that. There's an Aipom on screen. She seems to be enjoying herself, giggling and batting the Pokegear from one paw to one paw to tail and back again, causing the video feed to rattle and only catch the barest glimpses of her trainer, who is (unsuccessfully) attempting to get the Gear back.]
Come on, do we really need to do this just as I first get here? Really? (This is just like last time --)
-- aha! Okay, you. Give it to your best friend Phoenix Wright, now. That's it.
[She doesn't come quietly. Phoenix pries the device from his unruly Pokemon and, at last, comes into proper focus. He's a man in his thirties, blue eyed and sharp haired, and is glancing around himself with a vague sense of familiarity.] Well. It's good to be back, Johto. Your taste in music hasn't changed, I see -- is, uh, does this thing still work? There's not way I'm going to keep up with any of this new Pokemon technology. It's bad enough keeping up with technology for my own world. (I bet Trucy would know how to use this.) [Is she here? She could be. Phoenix makes a face; that's one thing he is not looking forward to experiencing again. Multi verse mechanics. He's too old for this.]
Anyway. This is Phoenix Wright, attorney at law, speaking. Normally, this would be where I start my investigation, but...
...I am so confused. What am I doing back here?
Well, either way -- if someone wouldn't mind giving me a hand, or if you have any information about this world, give me a call. I don't have an office yet, but if it matters that much, maybe I can find a few cardboard boxes lying around. That might be an improvement actually.
Third Person Sample:
Everything seemed similar enough -- the routes were laid out the same, from his quick investigation in the looming Route 29 (as directed by a helpful local, who offered to teach him how to use a Pokeball, to which he politely declined), although the quaint New Bark Town seemed a little more developed than he remembered...was that a ferry?
He sure had a lot of investigating to do. Phoenix, with the small monkey like Pokemon bouncing along on his shoulder, did his best to ask around town for information. No, Mr. Wright, there are no "law offices" here. Yes, Mr. Wright, that's a Pokemon. No, we don't remember you. Why do you keep showing us your badge, Mr. Wright? (He can't help it. It's been a few months since he got it back, but he's still excited.)
After settling on the fact that Johto has, in fact, changed a bit since the last time he'd been here, the attorney decides to do the best logical thing, which is to head immediately into the wilderness in search of help. That's what trainers did, right? Fight Pokemon, fall off ledges, the good ol' Pokemon adventure. It was...nostalgic, really, although a few minutes in and Phoenix had to pause, glance up at the sky. Things were...different, now. He had a daughter back at home to worry about. An entire law office. Sure, there were stakes last time, but...he was still young. A little more fresh faced, a little different.
He remembers his "starter" Pokemon from before. Good ol' Butch. The small Aipom squeaking curiously at him certainly reminded him of Quagsire, that's for sure; Phoenix reaches out to rub at her scalp, finding himself smiling fondly at the Pokemon already. "Looks like it's just you and me for now, huh? I bet the girls would get a kick out of you. You seem like the type of Pokemon that likes to play tricks on unsuspecting trainers like me."
A little giggle of 'ai ai' confirms this. Phoenix laughs, shifts the bag slouched over his shoulder, leans back against the nearest tall tree. A Hoothoot peers down at him from the trunk, far above his head. "Well be fine," he says, mostly to himself. The Aipom tilts her head, confused but intrigued, and Phoenix continues. "I'm an ace attorney, after all. I can be an ace trainer again, right?
...don't give me that look."
